Shaolin Kempo Karate

Kempo, translated into English as “Law of the Fist”, is a style of Karate with its origins in China, and developed in the west. This martial art teaches self-defense and self-control through three primary methods: self-defense techniques, forms, and sparring. However, Kempo diverges from traditional Karate in several important respects. Students are encouraged to change and adapt the techniques. Kempo emphasizes vital point attacks using punches, strikes and kicks. Throws are also important in Kempo.
Joe KickSelf-defense techniques help Kempo students develop their skills by allowing them to practice with different threatening situations and experiment with what-if scenarios. Initially, forms and katas help students to develop mental concentration and mental discipline. As they progress, the forms and katas help them to develop self-awareness and self-expression. Sparring is an exercise in which students test their skills, self-confidence, and self-control in a friendly competition among other classmates. It gives students the opportunity to develop their reflexes and timing in a controlled environment while engaging in a sport activity.

The Kempo style strives to maintain a balance between "martial" and "art." The "martial" aspect is expressed by effective efficient self-defense concepts and techniques. The "art" is expressed by creativity, self-expression, and presentation of form.

Thai Kickboxinng

Thai Kickboxing, or Muay Thai, has been an integral part of the Thai culture for more than five centuries. Soldiers have trained and used the techniques for as long as there has been an army in Thailand. For the military it has always been the close combat fighting skill, the martial art of the battlefield. But the discipline quickly evolved into an athletic pursuit, and became the sport of both kings and commoners. In fact, in the 16th century, national disputes were often settled in Muay Thai matches.

Here in America, the popularity of Thai Kickboxing is exploding as people discover its value not only as a practical self-defense skill, but as a fun and exciting workout as well. As Tokyo Joe’s Students advance through the ranks, they master lightning-fast combinations of crippling arm and leg strikes. This training puts students on the fast track for weight loss, body toning, greater focus and discipline.
