Our Programs & Classes
Tokyo Joe's students are drawn to the martial arts for many reasons. Some for the physical fitness and weight-loss aspects of training. Others seek to add discipline and self control to their lives. Still others are concerned about safety and self-defense.
Whether you are interested in our programs for mental or physical well being, Tokyo Joe's Studios of Self Defense offers a number of programs that will fit your developmental needs and your busy schedule as well. Click here to view our Weekly Class Schedule.

PANTHERS
Our youngest students, ages 3 through 6, are our Panthers and Dragons. At this super-formative stage of development, our kempo program is geared towards developing focus and sharpening motor skills. Through "disguised repitition", our young students master basic techniques, and are introduced to more complex sequences of moves. The result is heightened coordination, longer attention spans and better self-control. Students are also engaged in conversations about the core values of martial arts, what we call the "Five Rules of Discipline": Effort, Manners, Self-Control, Honesty and Character. |

DRAGONS
Our Dragons are students ages 5 and 6. Students at this age, in addition to improving coordination and balance, and mastering basic skills, are introduced to slightly more complex techniques. This helps improve the student's ability to learn sequences, and is a great confidence-booster. Students are also engaged in conversations about the core values of martial arts, what we call the "Five Rules of Discipline": Effort, Manners, Self-Control, Honesty and Character. |

JUNIORS
Character development is also an essential part of our education of students ages 7 through 12, as they embark on a journey towards Black Belt Excellence. Our Junior program includes all aspects of Shaolin Kempo Karate training: mastery of basic blocks, strikes, stances and footwork; combinations; traditional forms; jiu-jitsu technique; and weapons disarms. A junior student is not expected to know as many techniques as an adult student of the same rank, but is expected to hone these skills to a high-level of excellence. |

ADULTS
Our Teen and Adult students come from every age group, background, physical ability and athletic experience level. They all share one thing in common, though: a desire to strengthen mind, body and spirit through martial arts training. This common goal brings out the very best in each student, and makes for a fun and exciting feeling of community in each class. |

KICKBOXING
Our Muay Thai program (see "Kempo and Kickboxing")offers a high-octane workout based on this devastatingly effective form of combat. Students condition their hearts, develop and tone lean muscle mass, and learn practical self-defense, all while having a great time. Kickboxing is open to anyone 14 years or older. |

SPARRING
Sparring is an optional activity for students ranked below Brown Belt, but one that is highly encouraged for all Tokyo Joe's Students.
In a safe and friendly atmosphere, students put on protective gear and engage each other in competitive sport sparring. This teaches each student how to hit--and take a hit--in fast-moving and unpredictable circumstances. A great work out, and lots of fun! |
